Mainz is the capital of the German federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate, is located about 20 kilometres west of Frankfurt (Main) and has approx. 200,000 inhabitants. It has an some 30 kilometres long, metre-gauge tram network. A special feature is the very narrow and steep section between Schillerplatz and Am Gautor in the inner city: the two tracks run partly in parallel streets and have a maximum gradient of 9.5 %.
