The FLIRT electric multiple units are manufactured by the Swiss company Stadler Rail AG. The designation FLIRT is an acronym and means "Flinker, leichter, innovativer Regional-Triebzug" (= agile, light, innovative regional multiple unit). The first unit was introduced in 2004. Since then, more than 1,000 units were sold in two to eight-car units in numerous countries.
